  3. Positive Image Now Available

  7.   Floppyshop  are   delighted  to  announce  the  release  of Positive
  8. Image, a high end  image  processing tool  developed primarily for the
  9. Atari TT and Falcon030 but which  also  runs capably on a standard ST.
  10. Positive Image has  come    about  as  a  result of extensive research
  11. into professional photographic image  retouching packages on non-Atari
  12. machines. The result is an image  processing studio, such as has never
  13. before been seen running on Atari computers!
  14.  
  15.   Positive Image runs on any  TOS  based  computer  but is enhanced to
  16. take  full advantage of  the  improved  hardware  on  the  STE, TT and
  17. Falcon, especially the DSP on the Falcon.  The blitter (if present) is
  18. also used to  maximum  effect.  There   are  two  versions of Positive
  19. Image,  one for  68000  based  ST/e's  the  other   for 68030 machines
  20. (including PAK 68/3 accelerated  ST/e's  and  Apple Macintosh machines
  21. running MagiC  Mac).   The  basic  68000  version  contains  all   the
  22. features of  its  big  brother,   being  limited  only  by  the slower
  23. processor speed  and  lower resolution displays.  If your ST/e,  TT or
  24. Falcon has  a   processor  accelerator  or  graphic card fitted,  this
  25. too will be used to  its fullest capabilities.
  26.  
  27.   Positive  Image is the ONLY  GEM  based  image processing program to
  28. allow  the   editing  of 24-bit True Colour graphics on an ordinary ST
  29. in any resolution   (including  low res!).   A high spec system is not
  30. necessary in order to  run Positive  Image,  but the program will take
  31. full advantage of the increased processing  power if it is there!  The
  32. following is a list of the program's main features:-

  34.   System Compatibility
  35.  
  36.   *   Minimum requirements:  1 Meg  of  RAM  only,   4  Meg of RAM (or
  37. more) and a hard drive are recommended for serious use.
  38.  
  39.   *   Supports all screen resolutions (including ST low res) on the
  40. ST/e,  TT and  Falcon including  overscan,  all virtual screen drivers
  41. and the various   resolution  boosters  such as Autoswitch Overscan on
  42. the ST  and  all  known   hardware and software resolution boosters on
  43. the Falcon 030.
  44.  
  45.   *  Compatible with all official  releases  of  TOS (1.0,  1.2,  1.4,
  46. 1.6, 1.62, 2.05, 2.06, 3.05, 3.06, 4.01, 4.02, 4.04) and the developer
  47. version of 4.92.
  48.  
  49.   *  Fully compatible with GDOS  1.1,   AMC  GDOS, FontGDOS, FSM GDOS,
  50. SpeedoGDOS   v4, SpeedoGDOS v5, NVDI 3 and  NVDI 4 with regard to both
  51. font and printer support.

  53.   *  Compliant with all 100% GEM compatible graphics cards.
  54.  
  55.   *  Fully compatible with MagiC Mac.
  56.  
  57.   *  Fully compatible with Gemulator 4.

  59.   *  Supplied in two versions  for  the  different models in the Atari
  60. range. The   basic  program runs  on  any  Atari and the 68030 version
  61. runs on any 68030  or   68040   based  TOS compatible system and takes
  62. advantage of the  DSP in  the Falcon.

  64.   Multi-Tasking Features
  65.  
  66.   *  Fully compatible with Multi-TOS, Geneva and MagiC 3 or 4.

  68.   *  Supports extended AES messages  from Multi-TOS,  WinX, Geneva and
  69. MagiC 3 or 4.

  71.   *   Supports  the  Xacc  and   AV  protocols  for  sending  messages
  72. betweenprograms.

  74.   *   Support  for  Multi-TOS  and  MagiC  3  and  4's  drag  and drop
  75. protocol   whereby  a  group   of   images  are  dragged  onto an open
  76. window and are all loaded  in  a single operation.

  78.   General Features

  80.   *   Extensive  file  support  allows the following  graphic  formats
  81. to  be imported:  AIM,  Degas,   Windows  and OS/2 Bitmap, EZ-Art Pro,
  82. IFF (including   Deluxe Paint ST,  standard HAM,  high res HAM,  HAM6,
  83. HAM8, HAM12 and 24-bit   HAM),   IMG   (including HyperPaint X-IMG and
  84. conventional  X-IMG),  InShape,    Imagelab,    JPEG,   MTV  Raytrace,
  85. NeoChrome,  PC  Paintbrush,  Photochrome,    Portable  Network Graphic
  86. (PNG),  Prism Paint, True Paint,  Spectrum  512  (both   50hz and 60hz
  87. pictures),  TrueVision Targa, TIFF v6  (including CCITT fax and   JPEG
  88. support) and Tiny.

  90.   *  Saves out in most popular formats including TIFF,  BMP,  JPG,
  91. PNG,  TGA, XIMG, EZA, P?1 and NEO amongst others.

  93.   *    Full  support  for   true   (i.e.    non  paletted)  256  level
  94. Greyscales,  fully   preserving  the   colour  depth.   These are even
  95. supported for  image formats    which  do  not  ordinarily handle this
  96. type of image!
  97.  
  98.   *   Comprehensive file information (filename,  format,  compression
  99. method,   dimensions, memory required, memory free) given when loading
  100. images.
  101.  
  102.   *  Handles conversions between  monochrome,   16 colour, 256 colour,
  103. Greyscale   and   True   Colour,   performing  colour  quantisation or
  104. palette boosting  as necessary.
  105.  
  106.   *  Colour selection compliant with both RGB and CMY standards.
  107.  
  108.   *  Supports separate  editing  of  the  red,   green,  blue and mask
  109. channels with colour images.
  110.  
  111.   *   Subject to memory and/or  available  hard  drive space,  an UNDO
  112. buffer  is   available   at  all  times,   allowing  'mistakes'  to be
  113. reversed easily.  UNDO works  for  almost  all  operations in Positive
  114. Image.
  115.  
  116.   *  All  images  are  stored  internally  in  24-bit  format  and all
  117. operations  are   carried out  on  the  24-bit  representation held in
  118. memory.  This ensures  that  the  same  quality  results  are obtained
  119. whether  pictures  are edited  in  monochrome or True Colour.
  120.  
  121.   *  Near-instantaneous screen redraws in True Colour mode.
  122.  
  123.   *  Images can be intelligently rescaled and anti-aliased to suit the
  124. size of   your  paper  (or the dimensions of your choice provided they
  125. do  not exceed   that of your paper!). Realistically you can print out
  126. an image at up to  400%  of  its  original  size at 300dpi without any
  127. noticeable loss of quality.
  128.  
  129.   *   Optionally  uses  windowed  dialogues  which may  be  moved  to
  130. a  more  convenient location when  work  is being obscured.  Access to
  131. the menu bar   or  other   GEM  applications  is  also  supported when
  132. running under MultiTOS  with this feature enabled.
  133.  
  134.   *  Multiple dialogues can be open at the same time and you can move
  135. between  them  freely,   even  under   single-tasking  TOS.   In  fact
  136. different tools can be   active  for  different  images  and  Positive
  137. Image   always  remembers   the   currently   selected  tool  for  the
  138. appropriate image!
  139.  
  140.   *   Includes its own virtual memory feature which runs on any Atari
  141. with  a    hard  drive.  Positive Image  is also fully compatible with
  142. TT Fast RAM  and   virtual memory drivers on the TT and Falcon such as
  143. Outside.
  144.  
  145.   *  Supports multiple loading of up to five images at once from the
  146. Selectric    file   selector   and    inserts    the   filemasks   for
  147. supported  formats into  Selectric's list of masks. These features are
  148. also available to users of the Freedom file selector.
  149.  
  150.   *  Makes use of the GEM Clipboard for cutting and pasting of blocks.
  151.  
  152.   *   Allows you to specify your Clipboard directory and creates  a
  153. Clipboard for you if you don't already have one.

  155.   *  Retains multiple blocks in the Clipboard to facilitate easier
  156. creating of montages.

  158.   *   Clipboard  support includes the ability to clear all  blocks  or
  159. delete individual blocks after use.

  176.   *   All   the  common  text  attributes  such   as   bold,   italic,
  177. underline  and outline may be  applied  to  your text and previewed on
  178. screen before use.

  180.   *   Powerful  block  handling  features  include  the choice  of  11
  181. different overlay methods with user definable transparency feature.

  183.   *   The  ability to use  any  of  the  RGB  channels of the block or
  184. image as  a mask channel when pasting blocks.

  186.   *   Supports  the  creation  of 3D random  dot  stereograms  and
  187. foreground enhanced stereograms.

  189.   *   Sixteen zoom levels allow you to scale an image up or down to a
  190. maximum factor of eight. When zoomed  (in or out), blocks, brushes etc
  191. are all scaled accordingly.  Outsize images  can be zoomed out to view
  192. the entire image  for pasting   blocks   or defining localised regions
  193. for  processing.  Zooming   in  allows  fine  editing  right  down  to
  194. individual pixels.

  196.   *  Fully illustrated in-depth 136 page manual which covers not only
  197. the  use of  Positive   Image  itself  but  also  the fundamentals  of
  198. image processing.  Includes extensive   cross-referencing,  a glossary
  199. of over 250 terms  used  within  the  manual,   a guide to the various
  200. graphic file formats and a  handy trouble-shooting section. Written by
  201. a former regular contributor to several popular Atari magazines.

  203.   Falcon Specific Features
  204.  
  205.   *  3D graphic interface.
  206.  
  207.   *  Compatible with 32Mhz and  40 Mhz accelerators (including BlowUp-
  208. FX).
  209.  
  210.   *  Fast  DSP code handles most processor intensive operations such
  211. as  re-scaling, rotating, filtering, dithering and such like.

  213.   *  Works on both VGA and RGB monitors as well as ordinary TV sets.

  215.   *  Fully  compatible  with ScreenBlaster  BlowUp030  and  other
  216. resolution enhancers.

  218. Printer Support

  220.   *  Fully supports printing from any version of GDOS or SpeedoGDOS.

  222.   *   Also  includes  its   own  printer  drivers  as  an  alternative
  223. to  those   available with the various GDOS versions.

  225.   *   Non-GDOS based printer support includes all 9-pin and 24-pin
  226. Epson  and   IBM models, HP  DeskJet  (colour  and mono), HP LaserJet,
  227. IBM  ProPrinter,  Epson  Stylus  (mono   and  colour)  and  Postscript
  228. printers.

  230.   *   Supports  half-toning,  random dithering,  clumped (the method
  231. used  by   newspapers)  and  Floyd-Steinberg  dithering  as options to
  232. use  when printing out.

  234.   *   Uses  data   compression  when  printing  to  HP  Laserjets  and
  235. Deskjets  to  reduce printing time.
  236.  
  237.   *  Images can be printed to disk if memory is low.  These files can
  238. then  be double-clicked from the GEM Desktop and sent directly to the
  239. printer.  They   can  also  be  printed  out  from  PC,   Mac and Unix
  240. machines if you transfer them   via a PC formatted disk.

  242.   *  Can export images in PostScript format.

  244.   Image Processing Features
  245.  
  246.   *   All  the  usual tools such  as  Brightness/Contrast,  Contrast
  247. Stretch,   Negate,  Threshold,  Histogram   and   Equalise are present
  248. as  well as  many revolutionary new ones.
  249.  
  250.   *   Images  can  be  rotated  to  any  angle in either  a  clockwise
  251. or anti-clockwise direction to an accuracy  of one degree. Uses DSP on
  252. the Falcon.
  253.  
  254.   *  Real-time mirroring of images.
  255.  
  256.   *  Comes supplied with six commonly used image processing filters
  257. (including smooth, sharpen and remove noise) built-in.
  258.  
  259.   *   Allows  the  user to create his/her own external filters  for
  260. use  with Positive   Image.   The   package   includes  about a  dozen
  261. useful pre-defined external filters including  Blur, Emboss, Erode and
  262. Vibrate.
  263.  
  264.   *  Supports 256 level (8-bit) masking. Includes a configurable
  265. gradient mask tool which allows you to create your own masks.
  266.  
  267.   *  Allows processing of user defined rectangular,  circular,
  268. elliptical and bezier   area   definitions  within  Greyscale and True
  269. Colour  images without affecting other areas of the image.

  271.   *   Powerful auto-trace tool  supports  user-defined tolerance level
  272. to allow easy  selection of multi-coloured  areas of similar RGB value
  273. eg; could  be used to select a sky background.

  275.   *   Pixel  precise  area selection  of  any  shape supported by  use
  276. of  Alpha Channel handling.
  277.  
  278.   *   Image  warping (two different implementations  supported)  and
  279. shearing enable  life-like  twisting  and  distorting of  images.  The
  280. closest you'll get to morphing on  a non-frame based package. You must
  281. see these features to   believe  them!  They  are fully operational in
  282. the demo version!

  284.   *  Supports gamma correction of images for screen and/or printer.
  285.  
  286.   Image Retouching Features
  287.  
  288.   Besides  having a powerful compliment of image  processing  tools,
  289. Positive Image  includes a number  of  localised retouching tools with
  290. user definable brush  size and  shape.   These  are for the main part,
  291. similar in concept  to those  found  in any standard graphics package,
  292. but  further  enhanced   to   fully   exploit   the  image  processing
  293. capabilities of Positive Image.  The retouching tools are as follows:-
  294.  
  295.   *   Sharpen/Blur  -  A  dual  purpose  tool  which applies  a  local
  296. high  pass sharpen (or blur) filter to the pixel beneath the mouse.
  297.  
  298.   *  Dodge/Burn - A dual purpose tool which lightens or darkens each
  299. pixel  in the area beneath the  mouse,  when used on Greyscale or True
  300. Colour images.
  301.  
  302.   *  Eraser - Erases any given area with the eraser adopting the size
  303. of the currently selected brush.
  304.  
  305.   *   Fill - A standard fill tool as found in most graphics packages
  306. but  with user control over opacity, fade and strength.
  307.  
  308.   *  Spraycan - A traditional airbrush tool with the added advantage
  309. that  you can set opacity, fade and strength to suit.
  310.  
  311.   *   Paint -  A  standard  painting  tool  which  applies your chosen
  312. colour to the image relative to  the  size  and shape of your selected
  313. brush.
  314.  
  315.   *   Pencil - Identical  to  paint  except  that  it  always works at
  316. single pixel level, regardless of the size of the brush.

  318.   *  Rubber Stamp - A multi-purpose cloning tool.
  319.  
  320.   *   Full user configurability of all image processing tools allowing
  321. you  to set the Opacity,  Fade  and  Strength  to  make them work like
  322. 'real' paint!

  324.   All  retouching tools may be used in Positive Image's variable zoom
  325. mode  to ensure pixel precise accuracy,

  329.   Positive Image  is available NOW. It normally costs 79 pounds + P&P,
